Roads to Rail 2026: a great weekend of steam, heritage and community
Organised by Swanage Railway, Roads to Rail Steam Rally 2026 was another memorable event, bringing together steam enthusiasts, exhibitors, and families, all there to celebrate Britain’s industrial and transport heritage.
Luckily, the weather was hot and sunny every day, great to show off the impressive display of steam engines, vintage commercial vehicles, classic cars, tractors, stationary engines, and other historic machinery. This year, visitors could take a brake van ride directly from the event field, travelling north along a little-used section of the rail track towards Furzebrook, which isn’t normally open to passenger services.
Roads to Rail Steam Rally 2026 was held in a slightly different (bigger) location from previous years, with two working arenas to demonstrate engineering and craftsmanship from a bygone era.
Finally, a big “congratulations” to Beth, whose friends had organised a baby shower for her. I happened to walk past these ladies just as they were waiting to surprise her. You can see photos of Beth and her friends below.
Events like the Roads to Rail Steam Rally continue to thrive thanks to the dedication of volunteers, exhibitors, organisers, and sponsors who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their commitment helps preserve important pieces of our industrial heritage while creating an event that can be enjoyed by young and old.
