Carpets of blue and violet Dorset bluebell flowers
If you’re looking for wild-growing spring flowers, Dorset’s bluebell woods are like stepping into a fairytale. Tucked away down quiet country lanes and shaded footpaths, they become a sea of violet-blue every spring. You won’t find the locations of many of these hidden Dorset bluebell woods plastered across tourist brochures either, but that’s all part of the charm.
PLEASE don’t trample the bluebells!
Enjoy the bluebells from the sidelines – just remember to stick to the paths and not trample any of the plants (bluebells are extremely delicate and also protected). A bluebell colony takes about 5–7 years to fully establish, so any damage, such as being crushed underfoot, prevents them from photosynthesising and can cause them to die. Naturally, no one wants to be the reason for that, so whenever you come across bluebells, please enjoy their beauty but don’t step on them and then we can all keep enjoying them year after year.
