The first Dorset early-purple orchids of 2026
Early-purple orchids (Orchis mascula) are among the earliest of Britain’s wild orchids to flower in springtime. In 2026, however, the early-purples started appearing a couple of weeks earlier than usual, as have many other plants and flowers.
You can see the distinctive purpleish-pink spikes of Dorset’s early-purple orchids pop up on sheltered chalk grassland, in ancient woodland, hedges, and roadside verges, usually emerging just after the early-spiders and green-winged orchids.
The early-purples in my photos are growing in a sheltered spot on north-facing coastal downland. In a week or so, there will be large numbers of them carpeting this hillside.
