1,475 life-size silhouettes of British servicemen who lost their lives on D-Day, alongside 50 French resistance fighters
I was lucky enough to bag a ticket to visit the D-Day tribute exhibition, featuring life-size silhouettes commemorating the 1,475 servicemen under British command who lost their lives on D-Day, alongside 50 French resistance fighters. It was a rainy, windy, and bitterly cold winter day when I visited; quite a challenge to get any decent photos. Surprisingly, there weren’t too many other visitors around, although the event has now sold out until it ends on 25th January, 2026.
On display at Fort Nelson, near Portsmouth, ‘For Your Tomorrow – The People’s Tribute’ was created by the charity Standing with Giants. It’s a poignant art installation, honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War.
After a nationwide search for a venue, the Royal Armouries offered to host the exhibition in time for Remembrance Day 2025, which would mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War.
This is the first time the exhibition has been displayed on the south coast of England. The soldier and resistance fighter silhouettes were previously shown at the British Normandy Memorial in France, where they were seen by more than 200,000 visitors.
