On Saturday 5th October 2013, two days after I took my first photos, Barkers suffered a fire at their Lower Parkstone branch. This has temporarily closed the launderette, although they still accepted dry cleaning and service washes from the temporary office at the back of their Parkstone branch.
Barkers have now re-fitted the launderette and re-opened on 23rd June 2014. Photos from before and after the fire, as well as during much of the renovation, can be seen below.
You can see a video of the fire here.
Barkers are a family-run business, first established by Ken Barker in the 1940s. They are the only independent laundry services and dry cleaning company in Southern England that is able to offer such a wide variety of products from under one roof.
In addition to their premises at Lower Parkstone, the Barker Group has branches in Andover, Bournemouth, Ferndown, Boscombe and Sherborne.
Barkers is now run by Matthew Barker, who is the grandson of Ken. Matthew is dedicated to building and improving on the skills and traditions handed down to him by his father and grandfather; his vision is to build the most environmentally, eco-friendly laundry in the world.
